Novel azo cpds. free from sulphonic acid gps., are of formula (I): (where R1 is amino or -NHR4 or -OR4, R4 being alkyl or cycloalkyl, or phenyl, naphthyl or aromatic heterocyclic gps., each opt. carrying =3 substits. of which one or two Cl, Br, alkyl or alkoxy and one is CF3, sulphoguanidine, nitro, cyano or gps. of formula -CO-NHR5 or -SO2-NHR5 in which R5 is alkyl or cycloalkyl, or phenyl or naphthyl each opt. carrying =3 substits. of which one or two are halogen, alkyl and alkoxy and one is CF3, NO2, CN, phenylamino-carbonyl and phenylaminosulphonyl; R2 and R3 are each, independently, H, OH, NH2, phenylamino, naphthylamino, alkoxy, alkylamino, dialkylamino, cycloalkylamino or N-phenyl-N-alkylamino; A is N or =CR6 in which R6 is H, halogen or alkyl; n is 1 in which case D is the residue of a diazo component, or n is 2, in which case D is the residue of a tetrazo component). Cpds. are as fast yellow-orange-red pigments for bulk dyeing plastic materials, e.g. PVC; for colouring oil- and water-based paints, varnishes, bulk dyeing viscose and cellulose acetate, pigmenting polyolefins, rubbers etc.; they are also used for printing inks, colouring paper pulp, coating and pigment printing of textiles, and as disperse dyes for polyesters, cellulose acetate and synthetic polyamides.
