Construction unit for renewing a stretch of track has wagons to transport new sleepers and old portable line sections. A series of wagons to lay the track have a roller conveyor which has at least one portal crane with equipment to raise the sleepers. The wagon series runs in the construction unit's direction of travel with the front part on the old track and the rear part on the new track. It is supported on a pivot mounting and has at least one pair of wheels normally spaced and one with a larger than normal space.
