Anti-algal compsn. contg. halogenated acetoacetic acid derivs. - giving long term effect e.g. in antifouling paints

Compsn. for inhibiting the growth of algae contains as active ingredient =1 carbonyl cpd. of formula R1CH2.CO.CHR2.COR3 (I). (Where R1=Cl or Br; R2=H or CN, R3=anilide reside, phenoxy, 1-3C alkoxy or mono- or dialkylamino). The compsn. may also include =1 Cu or Fe complex. (I) provide a long-term antialgal effect. They are applied as paints, generally contg. 0.1-10% (I), or as solns for porous structures, in e.g. alcohols, ketones, aromatics etc. A typical cpd. is gamma-chloroacetoacetyl -o-chloroanilide.
