Carbonates of formula (I) (where R1 is H, halogen, alkyl, alkylthio, alkenylthio or alkynylthio), e.g. (I; R1 = H), are new cpds. which may be prepd. by reacting dimethylcarbamoyl chloride of the formula Cl-CO-N-(CH3)2 (II) with a cpd. of formula (III) (where M is H or a metal, ammonium or trialkylammonium), the reaction being carried out in the presence of an acid binding agent when M is H. (I) are biocidal agents having nematocidal, insecticidal, acaricidal and, in some cases, herbicidal and plant growth regulating activity, as well as activity against viruses, bacteria and phytopathogenic fungi. Specif. claimed are (I; R1 = H) and (I; R1 = Me).
