The spiral teeth of a bevel gear are cut with a rotating cutter which is provided with cutting edges to produce the required tooth form. This method of tooth cutting may produce teeth with the depth varying from the inner to the outer edge of the teeth. That the teeth produced are of uniform depth is ensured by the use of trigonometrical formulas. Given the values of the following quantities, the cone angle, the spiral angle, the face width and the pitch circle radius of the bevel gear, together with the radius of the cutter, the required angle between the axis of the cutter and the axis of the gear can be calculated.
