The optical display, for beating out the seconds, uses a circular window (9) provided in the clock face, with a movable shutter (8) positioned behind the window (9) with the background visible through the window (9), changed rapidly each second, by movement of the shutter (8). The latter is fixed to a rotary drive shaft (6) which is driven via a toothed wheel (4) rotating with the shaft (3) of the indexing wheel (1), the latter being indexed by an oscillating anchor mechanism (2). Pref. the shutter (8) is in the form of a semi-cylindrical disc, or in the form of a vane with two opposing circular segments, and the colour of the front face of the shutter (8) is in the form of a semi-cylindrical disc, or in the form of a vane with two opposing circular segments, and the colour of the front face of the shutter (8) is different to that of the background seen through the window (9).
