The slag layer removal from a metal melt - by forming a slag-free zone on the surface of the melt and removing the slag with the aid of a skimming plate

The slag layer on the surface of a metal melt in the ladle partic. on an iron melt, is removed by (a) introducing an inert gas e.g. N2, through the backwall of the ladle so as to form a slag-free zone on the bath surface extending from the the backwall and (b) withdrawing the slag, which has been pushed towards the lip-pour, with the aid of a skimming plate, at an inclined position of the ladle. The gas is still blown into the bath while the slag is withdrawn. Removal of the slag is practically complete in a shorter period than with known techniques, and iron losses are reduced.
