The scrap shearing machine has an open trough terminating in the shearing plane and a pusher operating along the trough. Along the sides of the trough are moving compacting rams. The working faces of the rams (11) have a short vertical part (16) at the top and inclined surfaces (17) below the top. - The rams move on horizontal slide surfaces (12). The lower part (17) of the ram which slopes outwards away from the trough wider at the bottom has a block (23) which rests loosely on the slide surface (12) and is connected with the ram (11). To prevent possible canting of the rams they operated by levers (20, 21) connected by torsion tubes (19).
