A textile fabric in rope form is moved in substantially helical loops through liquid in a tank 12, over a rotating spiral guide 22, an idler reel 36 and a driven main reel 20. The leading end 32 of the fabric is attached to a swivel finger 26a of a conveyor chain 26 located at one end of the reels and spiral guide. The leading end of each new loop as it is formed is supported away from the idler reel 36 by means of a guide 40 comprising a horizontal support 42, substantially vertical rods 44 and 46, upwardly inclined rods 50 and 52 and cross rods 48 and 54. As the spiral guide rotates the loop is pulled off the guide which is then ready to receive the next loop. The main reel, spiral guide and conveyor chain may be driven by a common motor (Fig. 12, not shown) to which the main reel, determining the speed of the loops, is directly connected; the conveyor chain, whose speed determines the size of the loops, is connected through an infinitely variable gear box; and the spiral guide whose speed determines the spacing of the loops, is connected through a selectively variable transmission on the output end of the gear box. The shaft of the spiral guide may be connected to a drive shaft from the transmission, by means of interlocking end plates (Figs. 5-10, not shown). The fabric may be dyed, bleached, or scoured.
