The imaging plane of the telescope optical system has lying in it the horizontal top edge of a prism (5) which guides the path of visual rays, which is incident underneath its top edge and belongs to the lower half of the field of vision, via a further prism (6) to two convergent lenses (7, 8) adjustable in relation to one another. The convergent lenses trace the image of the measuring scale section corresponding to the instrument inclination in question in the imaging plane of the telescope optical system underneath the top edge of the prism. The apparatus also includes an oscillating drum.
