The bottles are fed along a conveyor to a first transfer wheel which places them in one of eight holder stations around the test carousel which also carries eight electro-optical test heads each with self-contained light source and detector which receives a stronger reflected signal from a damaged neck than from a good one. At the discharge station which is a second transfer wheel, an indicator lamp at the end of the individual test head is viewed by a fixed detector unit controlling an electromagnetic ejector mechanism which allows "accept" bottles to flow onto the "good" conveyor but which rejects damaged bottles onto a separate conveyor. After each test head passes the discharge station it passes in front of a multi-function self test head which illuminates an alarm lamp in case of faults in any of the essential elements of the test head concerned.
