A web of substrate passes through a perforating tool which makes a hole at the centre of an area. This passes between a mould of two tools; the top fixed tool has a central orifice to register with the hole, the bottom tool moves upwards and has a peripheral knife to cut the required area when the tools close together. Hot plastic material from a screw feed flows downwards through the orifice and hole and fills the mould space. After cooling the lower tool, knife and coated area drop away and the coated substrate is removed.
