The free jet nozzle for high quality optical liquid jets is particularly intended for dyestuff lasers, in order to produce a free jet of small thickness and negligible thickness variations, having to parallel, planar surfaces. In front of the nozzle outlet is provided a relaxation zone of the same cross section as the nozzle outlet and of length which is a multiple of the nozzle cross section thickness. Preferably the transition from the liquid supply pipe into the relaxation zone is conical or of pyramidal shape. The nozzle outlet has sharp edges and especially precisely identical cross section as the relaxation zone. Typically the polished relaxation zone has a coarseness of less than 1 micron.
