A computer determines spacings between pulses of the output pulse train n, corresponding to a or a + 1 pulses of the input pulse train N. The method involves addition, subtraction and comparison of integral numbers derived from the division ratio N/n, avoiding division resulting in rounding-up errors. A counter receives the input pulse train N and depending on control by the computer, releases a pulse after a or a + 1 pulses, as in 1958662. Pulse spacings a or a + 1 are calculated in addition from the product of the division ratio N/n by the ratio alpha/beta of the range alpha, in which equidistant spacing must exist, to the total range beta.
