An electromechanical impulse generator is for application in electricity meters in which a bar magnet is used to generate impulses via a mechanical linkage, and which avoids the problems of false impulses. It consists basically of a bar magnet (1) fixed to a central shaft (2) which in turn is associated with the wattmeter or other similar equipment, so that the magnet rotates at a rate dependent on the electricity consumption. Mounted beneath the magnet is a spring loaded (3) eccentric cam (4) and a disc (8) carrying posts (13, 14) which are driven round by a matching mechanical contact on the magnet (9). The mechanism is arranged to push a plate (12) to and fro at a rate dependent on the consumption rate, and so to affect the closure of a magnetically operated switch (10) mounted in the repeatedly reversing magnetic field. This in turn produces the required impulses.
