The apparatus includes first and second pick-ups each attached to the patient, with the first pick-up producing signals representing a first respiratory condition and cardiac activity, while the second pick-up produces a second respiratory activity representing signal. The signals are fed to processing and evaluating circuitry which is operative to produce warning and alarm signals in the event of a variation in the frequency of either the respiratory or cardiac signals deviating from predetermined values by more than a predetermined degree. The second pick-up may be a thermistor positioned in the patients respiratory flow passage, and provided with means for producing a warning signal if asphyxiation occurs.
