The shaft entry of a sealed encapsulated electrical machine is ignition proof. The shaft is mounted in journal bearings, with the entry gland supported on roller bearings. - There is a narrow ignition proof air gap between the shaft and the surface of the entry gland which remains constant. The gap between the external surface of the gland and the housing is also ignition proof. The gland (7) can perform dipping motions with respect to the housing wall (16). The external surface (14) of the gland is separated from the housing by sealing rings (18, 19, 20). The outer rings are welded to the gland and the ring surface of the housing respectively. There is an additional rubber layer between the surfaces of the sealing rings.
