A laminated stator core for an electric motor is held in the stator frame by twelve mutually staggered or angularly displaced shaping bars positioned inside the perimeter of the frame. The annular laminations are composed of flat frustoconical shaped segments positioned one against the other and each fastened into position by a shaping bar. Each segment has three slots along its inner end face, and the assembled, laminations have thirty-six winding slots around their inner peripheral edge. When a stator core having forty-two winding slots is used instead, each annular lamination is made up from two different types of segments arranged in alternate sequence such that in one type of segment each winding slot stands opposite a shaping bar and in the other type of segment each tooth or crown faces a shaping bar.
