During a mixing shot a length of film lies loose in all the available space in the camera. There is more space when both film spools are half empty than when one is nearly full. The correspondingly adjustable switch (106) on lever (104) is moved farther or less far away from a fixed switch (107) by an eccentric (35) mounted on the footage register (34). When a mixing shot begins (17 at F) the film drive (9, 11) is disconnected, and another drive (11, 101) engaged which moves a peg (102) away from the fixed switch (107) towards the adjustable one (106). When the peg arrives, the motor (7) is stopped and the drive latched (magnet 112 releases 109). Setting the drive to reverse (17 to B) tips a lever (47) to release the latch (112, 109) and start the motor in reverse. Motion continues until the moving peg (102) returns to the fixed switch (107) then the motor is again stopped and the second exposure can begin.
