The scanning is done by a column of photosensitive receivers whose signals are stored in a storage field moving synchronously with the scanning, narrower than the pattern in the scanning direction, and of the same height in the column direction. Isotropic processing programs are realised by coupling of signals in the parallel storage field, such as isotropic two-dimensional position frequency filters, isotropic extraction of topological features of a position pattern, and statistically optimal position filters with symmetrical filter function. The scanning raster corresponds to that of the receiver column and the size and pattern of the storage field in the scanning direction depends on the application. Signal processing is carried out by preferred direction and position dependent linking of individual storage locations, so that pattern features are extracted in accordance with their direction and position.
