A composite yarn is formed by forming a filamentary yarn into e.g. a balloon as it passes from a supply package in a spindle and advancing a fibrous untwisted roving through the spindle so that the filamentary yarn is wrapped around the roving (1). The filamentary yarn is less than 50 dtex (pref. less than 15 dtex) and the force required to produce an increase in length of 4% is 10 gm. The shrink capacity of the filamentary yarn is the same as that of the fibres forming the roving and 85% of the fibres of the roving are orientated in a longitudinal direction of the composite yarn. The method is cheap and produces a yarn of good quality and appearance which does not loose its twist or firmness when e.g. knitted.
