7-(Oxoalkyl)-1,3-dialkyl-xanthines (I) have the formula: (where R1 and R2 are 2-6C alkyl, cyclohexyl, alkoxyalkyl or hydroxyalkyl and A is 1-4C hydrocarbyl opt. substd. by a methyl group). (I) are agents for increasing the blood flow through skeletal muscles and have low toxicity e.g. LD50 (mice) 1000 mg/kg (orally) and 134 mg/kg (intravenously).
