The clamping mechanism is for items of cylindrical or polygonal section accommodated in a slotted sleeve compressed inwards and mounted concentrically in a rotary shaft. Compression of the sleeve (1) is effected by turning it in relation to the shaft. There can be a coil spring concentric to and enclosing the sleeve, one of whose ends works in the shaft. As relative rotation between sleeve and shaft takes place, the spring compresses the sleeve against the item. The latter can be a push fit in the sleeve, the friction torque between them being greater than the driving torque of the shaft which causes the spring to grip the sleeve.
