Disposal of mineral oil by bio-degradation - is accelerated by dispersion using treated alkaline earth oxides

Elimination of mineral oils or similar materials present in water-contg. systems, by contact with an alkaline earth oxide which is pre-treated to retard reaction with water, without making it hydrophobic. The oxide charged with oil is allowed to react with water to form they hydroxide contg. finely-dispersed oil, which is subjected to biological degradation. The oxide is CaO, pretreated with water-sol. organic cpds. with electron-donor functional gps., e.g. mono- or poly-hydric alcohols, such as certain silicates, e.g. montmorillonite. Hardened oil aggregates, e.g. from oil spills on land or water, which are not readily dispersed, are broken down and eliminated. The process is simple and economic, using cheap raw materials, e.G. lime.
