Polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine prepn. - from polyvinylpyrrolidone prepd. in anhydrous solvent in presence of radical inducer and opt. heavy metal auxiliary activator
Polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I) prepn. in which the PVP is obtained by polymerisation in an anhydrous organic solvent in presence of a radical inducer and opt. in presence of a heavy metal or atomic no. 23-29 as a complex salt of an organic acid as auxiliary activator, is of improved stability. The product is a known antimicrobial agent. Preferred solvents are isopropanol when preparing PVP of mol. wt. 40,000, and toluene. Up to 10% of water in the solvent may not affect the product. In aqs. solvents the addition of 0.01-1% of an alkali is recommended, e.g. buffers, ammonia and volatile mono-, di- and tri-alkylamines. Radical inducers include acetodiisobutyronitrile and organic peroxides.
