The hydrostatic piston pump or engine has a rotating cylinder block with radial pistons on a ported (47) shaft (1). On either side of the pressure port (47) the shaft has a groove (56) extending over the same arc as the port and holding a seal ring (2). At both ends of this port there is an axially extending groove (22) holding a sealing strip (15). Each ring and strip includes one or more pockets (12, 16), open on the cylinder block bearing surface, winch pockets communicate via a throttle duct (17) with the pressureised hydraulic fluid. The ends of rings and strips are in sealing engagement with one another.
