The quick-acting and fine adjustment is for use between two components sliding in relation to each other, and has a handwheel incorporating an epicyclic drive drive which can be brought in and out of use. The planetary wheels are balls and the annulus is a cylindrical bush, while the sunwheel is a cylindrical component with a V-shaped running surface. These allow the selection operation to be performed, and a friction drive to be transmitted with no external reactive forces. The sunwheel can be in the form of two tapered components, sliding in relation to each other. When slid apart they release the balls, and when moved together they clamp them between themselves and the annulus.
