Printed character recognition system - permits recognition of partially overlapping characters

The method for breaking down printed symbols in character recognition uses multiplicative comparison, which permits recognition to a certain extent of inadequately spaced or of partially overlapping characters, by elimination the need for a white zone recognition. In comparison with stored standards of comparison, a symbol which could be completely overlapped by a second having an additional limb, is distinguished by scanning the two dimensional area corresponding to the larger symbol to detect the presence of the second if a first result indicates the probability that the symbol scanned is the letter of the lesser extension.
