Telephone network with high traffic loading - operates by constructing inter-exchange connections in both directions and retaining best correction path

The telephone network has its traffic loading increased by avoiding certain limiting conditions as regards the direction in which a connection can be made. Connections between a calling and called exchange are made via the best connection path chosen by taking into account not only lines from calling to called exchange but also lines in the opposite direction from called to calling. A connection is first made in one direction from the calling to the called exchange. The called exchange then makes a connection in the opposite direction back to the calling exchange, using the usual criteria for call rerouting. The two connections are then compared in terms of line length and section criteria and the better of the two is chosen.
