Vacuum refining apparatus comprises a cylindrical vacuum chamber accommodating vertically disposed trays each having a central hole, side walls, and an overflow conduit. A heater encompasses the column of trays and the outlet of an overflow conduit is in communication with the underlying tray. An induction coil surrounds the column and in use establishes a magnetic field under whose effect molten metal in the trays climbs to the level of the overflow conduits. Impurities from the metal are received in a condenser located under the column. Used for continuous purification of tin of lead and bismuth. The apparatus provides an increased open metal surface and the overall dimensions of the apparatus are reduced with an increase in the degree of purification.
