Zig zagging strip material by cramming - uses narrow channel whose decelerating bounding walls are formed of belts instead of rollers

The use of belts makes it possible to deal with rougher materials than before, and to incorporate a binder before the material passes through the machine. A fibrous material (1) taken direct from a carding comb, is steamed and sprinkled with a binder before it passes between rollers (7, 8; 50, 51) into the channel between the belts, here shown as three sets (14, 15; 16, 17; 18, 19). The belts are each formed of several strands, which are interlaced where the belts cross, and each pair of belts moves more slowly than the previous one, thus cramming the material into pleats. The pleats open slightly as they pass over a roller (58, inward suction from 77) to have an adhesive sprinkled between them (60). Leaving the roller, they close again and pass through a heater (62) which sets the adhesive. If the belts (14, 16, 18) on one side of the channel are moved slightly faster than those (15, 17, 19) on the other side, the pleats lean forward and lie on top of one another.
