Method comprises providing surfaces between washer and separator, either during scrubbing or during separation, which have no catalytic activity wrt the gases which might cause formation of water-insoluble compounds having higher oxidn. states (e.g. causing the oxidn. of SO3-- to SO4--). The scrubber may be part of a power plant pollution control system. Incrustation of the scrubber surfaces is reduced. Surfaces in contact with the fluids present may be covered with plastics, rubber etc.
