The echo compensator, for communications systems, has a two-wire/four-wire transformer and has its response speed and adaptability increased over the arrangement described in the main patent. This is achieved by supplying the control device not only with the sum signal as in 223 9452 but also with absolute value of the output signal from the branching network. Further, the multiplier can be considerably simplified by connecting a sign-forming circuit between the output of the branching network and the appropriate multiplier.
