The bearing shell (2) used to locate a shaft or a spindle (1) is made from porous material. The bearing shell is placed in a housing (3) which is provided with internal fluid ducts (7). When the ducts are pressurized by the fluid, the pressure is uniformly transmitted to the bearing surface, partially by the fluid and partially by the contraction of the bearing shell. The radially loaded bearing shell (2) provides axial and radial stability on the screw spindle (1) or on similarly profiled shafts. Since the shaft is slightly compressible, it compensates possible profile errors on the bearing surface.
