A hydrostatic bearing has a bearing shell (9) with a number of separate opposite fluid chambers (16-19). The pressurised bearing oil enters two opposing fluid chambers (16, 18) through a common throttle valve (1) such that th oil pressure in each chamber is equal. If one of the two fluid chambers is subjected to an increased oil pressure due to external shaft loading, its supply path through the throttle valve is expanded, thus more oil is supplied. Since the throttle valve is made from an elastic material, the supply hole for the second fluid chamber is compressed. The oil supply to this chamber is therefore reduced, hence the pressure drops and the shaft tends to return to its central position.
