The cage (1) is held by a frame (2), and has a grille-floor (6) of wood, metal or plastic, so that the droppings and urine fall through onto a mesh (3) which is underneath and parallel to the floor (6). Underneath the mesh (3) and parallel to it, is an absorbent mat (4) which may rest on a metal sheet fixed to the frame. The absorbent mat (4) is of roughly the same size as the cage-floor. The mat is preferably made of acid-resistant plastic foam, and can be removed and replaced. The lower side and sides of the mat (4) has a layer, or coating which is impervious to liquid.
