The novelty is the compsn. by wt. 4-8% Al, 8-11% Si, 0.01-1.0% of a rare-earth element and/or phosphorus, the remainder being iron. The pref. alloy contains 0.05-0 5% rare earth element and/or 0.05-0.5% P, possibly with 0.01-3.5%, esp. 0.02-2.5% Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, Mo, Cr, V, W and/or Mn. Numerous esp. pref. alloys are listed, including (a) 4-8% Al, 8-11% Si, 0.05-0.5% rare earth element, 0.1-1.5% Ti, balance iron; and (b) 4-8% Al, 8-11% Si, 0.05-0.5% rare earth element, 0.05-1.0% Ti, 0.05-1.0% V, where Ti + V = 0.1-1.5%, balance Fe. Compsn. is an excellent material for magnetic recording heads. The invention reduces the grain size of te Fe-Si-Al alloys (i.e. the Sendust alloys) so they can be machined without chipping or splintering. The other alloying elements also increase the hardness and wear-resistance.
