The load line is intended to retain the cable in position on the sea bed to prevent damage and also to lift the cable if required. The line is a high strength, flexible wire that is loosely connected to the cable so that while under water it exerts no tension or compression. The flexible wire can be a group of several parallel strands or several cables connected together by a waterproof adhesive. The holders can be rings, tubes or hoses that are not affected if the wire or bundle of wires is twisted. An alternative design uses a chain or a series of rigid rods connected together to from a chain. Finally the line can consist of a series of waterproof heavy blocks.
