Pattern selecting cam assembly includes a spring steel plate provided along its longitudinal edge with castellated fingers which are bent out of the plane of the plate along a distance which is greater than the needle pitch and the ends of the finger are arranged to be located closely adjacent the cylinder periphery. Needle selecting sinkers are slowly displaced into their selecting position, held there for a required time and then allowed to return to their inoperative position under spring action. Knitting faults are prevented or reduced and knitting rate can be increased.
