Gearbox for transmission of high powers - uses parallel gear trains of bevel, helical and straight form

The input shaft (1) drives a layshaft (18) at the same speed, via straight cut gears (4, 5). The shafts (18, 19) then drive two parallel gear composed of bevel gears (2), 7; 3, 6). The bevel gears drive intermediate shafts (20, 21) which drive two gear wheels (10, 11) mounted on the same shaft (15) which has a certain amount of axial freedom. The last stage of gearing is to be followed by one or several further straight cut gears. By this arrangement, loading on the bevel gear teeth is reduced and the transmission of high powers does not need a multiple drive installation.
