The machine for stacking on or removing from pallets groups of containers positioned on the bottom of a bottle crate includes parallel horizontal transport tracks for the pallets and for delivering or removing layers of containers. A frame shaped grab head mounted on a horizontal beam is moved in a vertical direction by a first drive and is driven from one transport track to other in horizontal direction by a second drive. The lowering distance of the grab head over the pallet transport track is altered in steps in accordance with the height of the stack on the pallet. The horizontal beam is a portal bridge (9) of a constant length and at both ends has a vertical driving column (8). The horizontal drive (chain 20) of the grab head (16) is mounted inside the portal bridge (9) and the grab head (16) on one of its sides is guided at a distance on the outside of the portal bridge (9) without being overlapped by the portal bridge (9).
