A signal pulse is used for automatically centring an electric conductor in an insulating sleeve. The pulse gating unit is automatically calibrated during predetermined time intervals by comparing the received measurement pulse with predetermined nominal values. The measurement pulse is picked up with a calibration-cable balancing network and brought into the beam path of a CRT. Spatially limited interference from points on the insulation shell is tuned out in the video signals from which (signal) is formed a threshold signal converted into a positive output. This reverts to zero only when one complete line of the picture on the target is dark.
