The vertical container lift is of the paternoster type with endless chains running over top and bottom sprockets and equipped with driving lugs for the files at regular intervals. The upwards chain run passes through reception stations with loading mechanism releasing the files from the lugs, or engaging them. At one or more points between the upwards and downwards chain runs are file inverter mechanisms, each comprising a central platform (25) movable up and down, and an inverter table (30) extensible from the platform towards either side onto the path of the files. This is mounted between two successive loading and receiving stations one above the other, and moves vertically faster than the lift.
