When a measurement has to be made as the material is in transition between states, for example when melting a metal, the method of measurement will be different for each state. A sensor (22) indicates when the state transition takes place and drives a commutator (20) which selects the correct measuring device (17, 18 or 19). The commutator is also driven by a timing clock (24) if the expected time in a given state has been exceeded. the devices successively measure temperature of molten metal (17), oxygen content (18) and temperature of solidifying metal (19).
