A cash register for automatic price checking provides a facility for avoiding erroneous operation due to errors in the price held within a memory. The control unit consists of a keyboard, additional module, optical display and printer. Access to the adder, display and printer is only permitted to proceed providing that a satisfactory check has been made. The marked price is entered over the keyboard and a built-in memory module is accessed to provide reference price information. A digit by digit comparison process is initiated to provide verification.
