Forest fire extinguishing method - proposes starting lines of controlled small fires ahead of main fire to check its progress

The proposal concerns method for fighting forest fires by starting a line of small controlled fires ahead of the main fire. The controlled fires would be started by teams of two, one using a flame thrower and the other a fire extinguisher. The local small fires started by the flame thrower would be kemp in check and prevented from spreading in the wrong direction by the man using the fire extinguisher. The deliberately started local fire is allowed to burn itself out, so that when the main fire reaches the spot the burntout area acts as a checking device. The proposal envisages the supply of fuel and extinguishing agent to the team by helicopter, which directs also the operation by advising the teams in respect of the location and direction of the line of the controlled fires.
