The railway track rail head polishing machine incorporates sets of running gear mounted so that they can be raised and lowered beneath the vehicle frame. It is designed to prevent damage from obstacles in the track area, and eliminate the need for preliminary inspection in advance of the machine. It also permits one-man control from the driver's compartment, and polishes up as far as any obstacle. Sets of running gear are mounted at fixed intervals before and after those fitted for support and guidance of the polishing assemblies (3). These additional units carry a swivelling apron, extending across the track and below the rail surface plane. The apron activates a switch for control processes if they encounter an obstacle. Rail checking appliances may be mounted, to convey data to the driver.
