Reaction promotion in granular bed - kept in quasi-compact state by pulsating flow of one reactant partner

Reaction between several reactants, one of which contains carbon atoms, are carried out in a reaction zone which contains a granular solid as reaction promoter. The granular particles are arranged in a quasi-compact bed which is traversed by a pulsating flow of one of the reactants, pref. the one containing the carbon atoms. A simple and economic method of carrying out reactions such as the hydrogenation of coal or of heavy fuel oil. A better catalyst distribution results in a higher throughput. The formation of large bubbles by the gaseous reactants is eliminated.
