Microbiological H2SO4 prodn. is effected by using a mixt. of S and pyrites as raw material. The H2SO4 prepd. is used for leaching oxidic ores, e.g. U ores, clarifying waste waters and the prepn. of fuller's earths from less active clays. The H2SO4 obtd. has a high degree of acidity. Acidity achieved by microbiological S + pyrites oxidn. is higher with pyrites alone. Fe oxide presence, caused by use of pyrites, is advantageous in technical processes, e.g. catalysis of U ore oxidn.; flocculation in clarifying waste waters; detoxication of bacterial poisons, e.g. As, by partial hydrolysis by means of Fe2(SO4)3 formed. A mixed bacterial flora obtd., contg. Thiobacillus types in addn. to Thiobacillus ferrooxydans and an accompanying flora, can be controlled more easily.
