The self-advancing roof support for thick seams includes hydraulic props arranged behind each other in the advancing direction. The hydraulic props are provided at their bottom end with spherical joints resting on a floor beam (12). The top end of each prop is also fitted with a spherical joint and freely supports a roof cap (13). The angular stability of the support unit is ensured by a figure eight steering linkage (15) which is located between the floor beam (12) and the roof cap (13) and between the hydraulic props (10) positioned behind each other in the advance direction (arrow S). In a support unit with four right angularly arranged props (10), the figure 8 steering system is located between the side by side props (10), and is pivoted between props on the filling sides.
